Lawrence A. McWhinnie Obituary (1922 - 2006)

Lawrence John McWhinnie, 84, of Springfield, IL formerly of Taylorville, IL died at 2:10 pm Friday, June 9, 2006 at North Hills Hospital, Ft. Worth, TX. He was born February 23, 1922 in Kincaid, IL the son of James Douglas and Helen Cecelia Foltynewicz McWhinnie. On April 7, 1951 he married Irma L. Scholz in Taylorville, IL and she preceded in death on June 4, 1995. Mr. McWhinnie graduated from Kincaid High School in 1940 and had been employed by Norge Manufacturing in Muskegon, MI in 1941-1942; Peabody Coal Co. Mine #8 and Mine #57 from 1945 - 1951; U.S. Signal Depot in Decatur from 1951-1961 and Peabody Mine #10 from 1961 until his retirement in 1984. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving with the 978th Ordinance Depot attached to the 5th Army in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Springfield and a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylorville. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Local 9819, Knights of Columbus Council #2120, V.F.W. Post #4495 and was active in Koinonia. Surviving are two daughters: Sandra Urick and husband Carl of Ft. Worth, TX and Lynda Cliburn and husband Brad of Springfield, IL. 3 Step Grandchildren. Brother: Dan McWhinnie and wife Barbara of Taylorville, IL, sister: Helen Thomas Banky of Verbena, AL, sister-in-law Esther McWhinnie of Muskegon, MI and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother James Douglas McWhinnie, Jr. Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Friday, June 16, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Taylorville, IL with Father Alan Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with full military rites. A prayer service will be recited at 4:45 pm Thursday, June 15 at McClure Funeral Home with visitation from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
